She was stuck! Kymonia sat back against the soft leather upholstery of her office chair and closed her eyes in frustration as if doing so would somehow bring to mind that she needed to write for the next very important scene. Her deadline was running out and she was stuck at the love scene of her current book and very soon she would have the editor breathing down her neck, albeit through the phone.

She was just not feeling the main characters. At first they had connected and things had been developing well until it was time for them to consummate the relationship and that’s when she had become stuck in a hole. What had happened to the attraction that had sizzled between them every time they were within hairsbreadth of each other? She wondered, staring at the blinking cursor on her computer screen.

She had actually started with the chapter telling that the female character had started crying because she had discovered that her best friend had lied to her about something important and the male character had taken her into his arms to comfort her but that was where she was supposed to continue from but writer’s block had settled in.

Kymonia had always wanted to be a writer. She had been a nerd at school who wore glasses and with her head constantly stuck inside a book. Even when she was supposed to be asleep she would be reading and when she was not reading she was dreaming. Her teachers had always told her that she was constantly up in the clouds and she was going to find herself spread-eagled on the ground because she never paid attention to where she was going.

Her two best friends: Marla and Gabrielle had been the popular and beautiful cheerleaders who had for some reason took her under their wings but had never quite managed to change how she looked and thought. They were very different yet they had maintained a friendship throughout the years that had taken them to college where Marla had studied fashion design and Gabrielle had become a lawyer. Kymonia had studied English Literature and Creative writing.

She had taught for two years after college but had quit to follow her dreams. She had changed into a tall elegant beauty that had stunned everyone around her including her friends. Two years ago she had had written her first bestseller: ‘Woman in need’ that had flown off the shelves in all the major bookstores in several countries and had catapulted her up to the best sellers list. She had followed up a year later with a poignant love story of a woman dying of a terminal cancer and the man who fell in love with her and stayed with her till the end. It had earned her quite a few awards and had been turned into a made for television movie soon after.

Now at age twenty-four, her reading community and her editor and publisher were pressuring her for something else to top those two books she had written and it was not happening. She had been at it for six months and it was slow going.

Her mother had called her earlier and invited her over for Sunday dinner with her and her stepfather but she had told her she was in the middle of writing. At the rate she was going maybe she should just give it a rest and go out and take a break, coming back with a fresh perspective.

Her father had died when she was just five years old and her mother had remarried five years after to a genial hardworking man who had never hesitated in giving her the love and care that she needed even though she was not his biological daughter. She called him pops, he was as pleased as punch that she did and they had gotten close over the years. She had bought them a house from her first royalty earnings and they were now living in a nice community where everyone knew each other and looked out for one another.

The phone rang just then and broke through her reverie. She uttered an impatient sigh as she realized that it was her editor Sylvia Bailey.

“Sylvia don’t you take a day off?” Kymonia asked her mildly, getting ready to hear the same story. ‘You need to meet your deadline.’

“Of course not darling,” the woman responded and Kymonia could picture her amiable face and the constant cigarette at the side of her lips. “How else am I going to make sure my authors are doing their jobs and getting their creative juices flowing?”

Kymonia stifled the impatient retort that came to her lips. It was Sylvia who had looked at her unfinished manuscript and encouraged her to continue writing. She suggested the necessary changes to be made and because of that she had remained grateful to her. “I am working Syl, I have just reached a road block right now but I will get there.”

“I have told you that you need to get your battery recharged darling,” the woman told her impatiently. “When was the last time you had sex?”

“Excuse me?” Kymonia felt the startled laugh bubbling up inside her.

“Sex sweetie, the thing between a man and a woman that makes the world spin on its axis and sometimes manage to make you reach an orgasm.” She sighed. “When was your last relationship?”

“I don’t see why that has to do with anything,” Kymonia told her firmly.

“Of course it has to do with everything! If you have not made love in a while how are you going to write a love scene?”

“By using the very vivid imagination God gave me,” Kymonia told her, her hand rubbing her temple. She needed to end the conversation as soon as possible.

“That’s not enough.” The woman told her decisively. “I have just the thing; tickets to the opening of the trendy new restaurant uptown this Saturday. I will messenger them over to you tomorrow first thing. You could take your girlfriends with you and maybe you could find a man there who could give you enough sex to blow your mind and put you back on track.”

“Let me get this straight: you want me to go out and find a random stranger to have sex with just to write my love scene?” Kymonia asked her incredulously.

“Of course not darling! Not any old stranger, maybe someone well known and not a pervert or a serial killer or both and wear something sexy, it helps.” She hung up the phone before Kymonia could respond.

Kymonia sat there staring at the phone she had just put back into the cradle then she burst out laughing! The very idea that she should have sex just to be able to write her love scene was ludicrous to say the least! She had enough imagination for ten people and she was going to use it without having to use that means. She had often been asked about her love life when she had been interviewed and had always managed to sidestep the questions. How would it look for a writer of romantic fiction to have only had one disastrous relationship two years ago that had ended as soon as it had begun?

It had been her first year teaching at the local high school and he had been a fellow teacher who taught Science. She blinked as she remembered thinking that he was way too handsome to be teaching a subject like Science and he had laughed when she told him that. The relationship had blossomed quickly and she had envisioned herself getting married and settling down with him and raising kids together. She had given him her innocence without hesitation and he had taken her in his apartment while telling her that she was the only one for him. It had taken a month for her to realize that he had been sleeping with most of the female teachers on staff. That had been part of the reason why she had left without looking back and she had never entered into another relationship since.

Gabrielle and Marla had told her not to let that creep be the reason why she never had a relationship, that would be giving him too much power but she could not help herself, now she was being very cautious.

She stood up and stretched languidly padding over to the balcony to look at her tomato plants to see how they were progressing. It was almost the end of summer and it had rained earlier in the day. The droplets were still on the leaves making them glisten in the fading sunlight. She had bought an actual house a year ago with yard space and very near to a wooded area that led to an old abandoned building that was slated to be demolished the next two weeks. Sometimes when she needed outdoor space s
he would take her laptop and a picnic basket and would sit and write until the sun went down. Until she could not see properly and only then she would head back to the house to see the light on her machine blinking like crazy.

Marla and Gabrielle had often told her that the abandoned building was probably home to creeps and weirdoes and she should have better sense than to leave her perfectly safe home to go into a building that was also probably a rapists’ pad. She had laughed and told them that she was perfectly capable of taking care of herself.

The house was a charming split level building with mellow brick walls and glass doors and windows to capture the light of the sun. It had three bedrooms, two baths, a work office that she had designed herself, and a kitchen/dining area and a living room. She had made some alterations and added a fireplace in the living room that she lit whenever it got cold. She hardly used the modern kitchen, sometimes forgetting to eat when she was writing and usually had several take out leaflets on her fridge to order out. Her friends were always coming around to check up on her and bemoan the fact that she had chosen to live in the countryside.

She waved to her next door neighbor Mrs. Willows who lived alone since her husband had died ten years ago. The woman was sometimes too friendly and intrusive but she had gotten used to her and did not let her bother her too much, she supposed the woman was a bit lonely and needed company.

“My dear, I had no idea you were at home,” she said wandering over to the tall wire fence that separated their yards. “I came out here several times hoping to see you and I did not see evidence of you being here.”

“I was trying to do some work Mrs. Willows,” she told the woman with a smile. Her friends said she was a nosy busy body and stayed away from her whenever they came around but Kymonia liked her. She was almost eighty but looked strong and was still erect with her wispy white blond hair and watery blue eyes and shriveled white skin.

“How is it going?” she had been so fascinated when the girl had moved in and she had discovered that she was the bestselling author she had read about in the papers.
